For some people, haring down the side of a mountain on two sticks is their idea of pure heaven. If your idea of an ideal holiday is skiing rather than lounging on a beach or exploring a city, then these might be the best places for you to try on your next break:

1. Aspen, Colorado: made even more famous by being the setting of the film Dumb and Dumber, this is the place to come if you want to live the high life for a while. Many of the world’s rich and famous people come here every year to take to the steeps on any one of the four mountains. There are slopes for all abilities, though, so even if you’re a beginner there will be plenty to keep you occupied. A bit pricey, though.
2. Mont-Tremblant, Quebec (Canada): part of the French part of Canada this ski resort has been open since 1939 and was the first resort in Canada. Better yet, if you fancy a change, this resort also offers a top-rate golf course.
3. Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France: possibly one of the world’s most famous ski resorts, this beautiful resort is situated at the foot of Mont Blanc and is the highest peak in the alps. It includes one of the world’s longest ski runs at 13.7 miles (Vallée Blanche).
4. Zermatt, Switzerland: It’s hard to talk about skiing without mentioning Switzerland, a country so enamoured with its mountains that it designed a chocolate bar in their image. This resort boasts three 5* hotels in this peaceful and picturesque setting. Plenty of natural snowfall and snowmakers on the lower slopes mean that there’s always plenty of coverage, though the frequency of snowfalls may make the resort more popular amongst snowboarders than skiers who can find soft fresh snow rather difficult to traverse after a flurry.
5. Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia: this resort offers the biggest vertical drop in North Aperica. There’s a lovely village at the centre of the resort with plenty of cafes and restaurants to enjoy after a full day on the piste.
